A well-known figure in politics, the Hon. Maxwell Burgess was elected to Parliament in Hamilton Parish for the first time in 1983, he was appointed Minister of Youth, Sports and Recreation, a post he held until February 1989.  He served as Minister of Transport then as Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety. 

Mr. Burgess was appointed Opposition Leader  in 1998 and later won a seat in Parliament in Smith’s South in a bye-election in 2001. 

Born in Bermuda , Mr. Burgess attended Francis Patton School, the Bermuda Technical Institute and the University of Maryland through its extension programme in Bermuda.  He was awarded a Certificate of Management by that University.

He was also given a Leader Award by the United States Government as part of an International Visitor Programme.   

A member of the Hamilton Lions Club and the Hamilton Parish Workmen’s Club, Mr. Burgess is also a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.  He is a member of the staff of John W. Swan, Ltd.
